The journey
The museum is designed to take the visitor through a political journey of the Party’s past. Each gallery contains significant ‘relics’ of a hard battle by the Seychelles People’s United Party (SPUP) to liberate Seychelles from colonial rule.
It all started when Mr. France Albert René formed the SPUP in 1964. Mr. René until now has been the President of the Seychelles Peoples Progressive Front (SPPF) the predecessor of the SPUP, who is great architect of this new society.
The reason for the interest in setting up this museum is that the people and personalities, the SPUP militants believe that the objects on display will keep alive the memory of the struggle to inspire Seychellois.
The key to the future of the museum must be, when once again all of us will come to terms with our political heritage and not have to accept the choice of some late faceless individuals. The Seychellois public has to become active agents in the choice of what it is that represents their past, with a truly participatory and grateful approach.
If the public views the photo of a young, smart and determined man as being historically significant, then who has the right to question that choice? It is formed from a highly personalized agenda and one that is a landmark.
The Museum housed the offices of the SPUP during the struggle for Independence and Liberation. The office of Mr. France Albert René who is the Leader of the Party, the Secretary General, Mr. Guy Sinon, the National Workers Union, Mrs. Rita Sinon, Mrs. Sylvette Frichot, Mrs. Marina Pascal were the secretaries.
In the Museum you will also find the first issue of the weekly newspaper, The People dated the 17th August 1964. The Queen stick that guards used to beat up supporters of the SPUP during mass demonstrations and strikes, as well as an exhibition of black and white photos that illustrate historical struggle of 1964 until the Liberation in 1977.
