Government comes to the rescue

Rice at the STC warehouse
It is effective as of this week that GST (goods and services tax) is no longer applicable on cooking gas, sugar, margarine and salt as well as the series of price revision of rice.

Government wants to lessen the impact that continuing price rises of essential goods on the international market is having on the public. It has set up mechanisms to absorb some of the costs to protect consumers, in line with its social policy.

Since Monday April 21, ordinary basmati, selling at R9 a kilo, now costs R10.50 a kilo, premium basmati, selling at R16.50, is now selling at R18 a kilo, while long grain rice will remain at R5 a kilo.

The Seychelles Trading Company (STC) will incur losses in the process, but at the same time government has stepped in to ensure the country has a good stock of rice, and through the Social Security Fund it is securing R500,000 every month for this purpose.

These price changes are in line with the STC’s price revisions, which are carried out every three months.

As for the removal of GST, the decision is also aimed at ensuring that people keep, as much as possible, their standard of living

Africa: Continent
to Grow 6 Percent - IMF

AFRICA’S economic growth is to expand by 6.5% in 2008 fuelled by a surge in oil exports, but the global economy slowdown pauses a risk, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said.

“The immediate prospects are for continued economic expansion but with a widening gap between oil exporters and oil importers,” the IMF said in its 2008 regional economic outlook.

The IMF noted that coupled with higher food and energy prices, inflation is poised to increase to 8.5%.

“The global economy is slowing down. Oil prices have risen to record levels and global financial markets are unsettled. This marks a shift from recent years when demand for sub-Saharan African exports was healthy and non-fuel commodity prices were growing at double digits.”

It noted that while African markets had shown limited reaction to global financial markets turbulence, a reversal of portfolio flows could reduce external financing and hurt growth.

“In light of these risks there is about one in five chance in 2008 that growth in sub-Saharan Africa will fall to less than 5%”

Seychelles’ first condominium units

Msye Terry Cafrine
The first tenants of the Union Vale Condominium complex are expected to move in anytime soon.

The project which comprises of several high-class apartments has revolutionised the housing sector of the country. We have come a long way, government had stimulated the types of houses after it had to destroy the caravans to pave the way for modern blocks of flats and apartments to deluxe condominiums, the latter are being built especially for Seychellois graduates.

The value of the Union Vale property has similarly shot up. Many people will remember the Chateau Vallon experience. Each unit of the condominiums has two rooms with a bathroom, sitting room, and verandah. All the rooms are spacious enough to fit in the necessary amenities
