President Michel participates with a group of young footballers in a seminar on drugs.

President Michel said these facilities can at least help to give the young ones positive activities to engage themselves in. He added that society must join the parents and schools to influence positively the upbringing of our younger generation.

"These children will one day become good citizens because they will grow up with these experiences", he said. President Michel said that the country has started a war against substance abuse and that to succeed it is better that we start with the children. They should taught that taking drugs is detrimental to them as it will destroy their lives.

The President noted that he is satisfied with the activities taking place at the centre. But that, efforts should be put into providing similar activities or more in future in other areas on the islands. There are at the moment the main centre at English River and another centre at Anse Royale. Youngsters can go to these places to learn the computer, to roam the internet, meet with friends, participate in seminars that debate on subjects that influence their well-beings and they also engage themselves in recreational activities.

Following the visit President Michel has decided that it remains to make the centre more animated and lively. He said his government will look for financial assistance so that more facilities hence more activities are introduced. He has called on the parents to send their children to these centres, and to the children to take it upon themselves to come to the centres to participate. The President said that the children should know that these are places where they are safe, and where they can learn to develop themselves with new experiences and talents

While we, the children, often react to each crisis as it arises, when our parents have failing health, society takes over the responsibility to look further down the road to our parent's future care and needs. This explains the visit of the President of the Republic to some of our elderly while they met to do embroidery at the English River Community Centre and Old People's Home at Union Vale.

At the Community Centre the President exchanged words with some women who are very prominent in activities that the elderly do at district level to keep them in harmony and to become good examples to the younger generation.

Surprised to see President Michel appears at their workshop, they put down their needles and cloths to welcome him and they chatted with him.

Leaving them the President headed to the Old People's Home at Union Vale. He went round the houses to meet with the residents. President Michel said that while it is important to take care of the needs of the younger generation it is also imperative that our generation look back to not only see the elderly people but to extend a caring hand.

The President is grateful to the old people, most of them they have struggled alongside him since 1964 and have respectfully retired in society. President Michel said that society must do whatever it takes to make sure that these people are well and comfortable. Just like he has seen the residents at Union Vale contented in their homes, his government will continue taking care of the others in other homes, and in society at large
