So Father Wavel is once again using the pulpit of St. Paul’s Cathedral for political ends.
Now, he can boast that this is where it all began for him. In 1991, he used the pulpit for a hard-hitting political sermon at the Cathedral, which was aired on national radio.
Those were the early days of Parti Seselwa. He was subsequently banned from Mass at St Paul’s if that was scheduled for broadcast on radio.
Bishop French Chang-Him said after Wavel went public as a political figure that he would have to choose between his priestly duties and politics.
For a while, Ramkalawan kept a low profile within the Anglican Church.
When Bishop Santosh Marray replaced French Chang Him as head of the diocese, he told Ramkalawan that politics and religion don’t mix.
A communiqué issued by the Church then stated that as Ramkalawan was in politics full-time, he had no ecclesiastical responsibility. He only officiated at Bel Ombre occasionally.
This, he told supporters is an indication that he would soon be elected President. The church was put on hold.
Then came the 2006 Presidential and 2007 Parliamentary Elections with resounding defeats.
Since, nothing has gone well for Ramkalawan, politically.
His rallies, marches and even indoor conventions have turned into nightmares, one pathetic turnout after another. Ramkalawan does not mind remaining Opposition Leader and enjoying the trappings of such office, such as high salary, gratuities, duty-free cars, paid staff etc. But he is worried sick about his ratings falling too low.
And now, we have a desperate Ramkalawan back in the pulpit, proclaiming he is speaking in God’s name.
Beware Seychellois. The man is desperate and using God and religion to further his own ends.
Most major religions acknowledge God as our Creator. But as humans, we are responsible for our actions as God leaves us free to act, we are held accountable for kindness as well as our sins. All the world’s tyrants have unscrupulously proclaimed they were pre-ordained by God.
This was the case for Adolph Hitler. His ‘heil Hitler’ was getting the German people to recognize him as their salvation. These are the wicked who invoke religion and God to further their unholy objectives.
More recently, despots in Africa like Idi Amin also claimed they were sent by God.
Bokassa of the central Africa Republic boasted that it was God and the people who had wished he be crowned emperor.
The Ayatollah Khomeiny of Iran is another preceding Ramkalawan who was supposedly at God’s calling.
We are sure however that Ramkalawan will fail in his endeavour of dragging religion into politics. Already, many church-goers are outraged by his behavior which implies disrespect and invites shame.
Someone will soon shout for him to stop. He has shaken his fist once too often!
